Who does a doula hire? I've been a doula for six years, andI know lots of doulas. When I got pregnant my husband and I knew we wanted a doula, but I was picky and knew exactly the kind of person I wanted to support me in my birth. It was Julie. Julie has a wise woman energy. She stays curious and if she senses turmoil she encourages you to drive deeper into yourself to explore what you're feeling. Julie has all the knowledge and experience, and on top of that she's incredibly thoughtful. She's gentle and humble, and stands her ground when needed. She's the quiet presence who will be exactly what you need of her. She's a doula's doula.

Julie’s communication, calm nature, and expertise were invaluable! I truly could not have made it through without her. During my pregnancy, she taught me techniques to make the birth go more smoothly (stretches, exercises, seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist). She also shared different educational classes and articles to read as well.
She was able to walk me through the entire process and explained to me exactly what to expect. I had a lot of comfort knowing that my husband was there to support me emotionally and that she was there to support me physically. She knew different pain relief measures and knew which strategies to suggest when (birthing ball, comb, shower, counter pressure, what to expect with an epidural, etc.). I appreciated not only her extensive training in different birthing methods, but also her varied, first-hand birthing experiences. I also was looking for someone who had experience with the hospital that I chose. Lastly, during my postpartum period, she offered support, guidance, and shared resources with us about the NICU while we were waiting for our baby to come home.

I had the fortune of having a doula for my first child's birth and while the experience was a positive one, I knew that for my second child's birth, I wanted more in-depth support from my doula. After speaking with a few local doulas, I met Julie and I could tell from our first conversation that she was the right match for my husband and me! Julie is calm, deeply wise and an excellent listener. It was clear to me that she had extensive knowledge and expertise, but I never once felt like she was pushing anything on me. She understood our needs and supported us in a way that made my son's birthing process feel easy.

Hiring a doula is not necessarily an inexpensive choice but it is one I'm so grateful I made. Julie's support was well worth the financial cost. Because of her, I entered my child's birth with more wisdom and preparation than I would have otherwise and I am really glad that my time with her marked the beginning of my son's life.

Julie has a wealth of knowledge and experience that she brought to all of our pre-birth meetings, where we learned so much that it really helped take away the fear I had started to feel as my due date got closer. Our experience with Julie felt very personal and tailored to our individual situation, which is something that was very important to me. She was very available and I felt like we had a true partner in her in the lead-up to delivery.
During delivery, Julie supported both me and my partner for over 24 hours. Having her there not only as an advocate but also as an expert who knew us and our values well was invaluable. We encountered some unexpected hiccups during the delivery so we were so grateful that Julie was with us to help us discuss different options and decisions we had to make. She worked very well with the doctors and nurses to make sure I was comfortable and informed, and they often commented on the lovely vibe in the room when they entered. Julie also switched off with my husband for hours feeding me ice chips between contractions - I felt like I was in very good hands between the two of them. I feel like she made what could have been a scary experience a much more positive one, which was paramount and one of the main reasons we decided to hire a doula.
Postpartum, Julie was wonderful support, checking in on me and the baby both through messages and in-person. We also had a de-brief on the delivery experience, which was very helpful to talk through.
Throughout the entire experience with Julie, I felt that she truly cared about me and my family. She is passionate about making sure her clients have the experience they want and works hard to make the birth process the positive experience that all birthing parents deserve. I don't even want to think about what my experience would have been like without her! Not only is Julie a wonderful doula, but she is a wonderful person, and I am so grateful that we were able to work with her.
